A student who was a former student shot and killed a University of Arizona professor inside the campus building in the afternoon of Wednesday, the university and a report claimed.

The shooter opened fire in the John W. Harshbarger Building on the main campus of the university in Tucson around 2 p.m. and forced the school into a lockdown for nearly an hour before the suspect was detained.

The university has confirmed in the statement that one person was killed during the shooting. The shooter was later identified as 52-year-old Professor Thomas Meixner, the head of the university’s Department of Hydrology and Atmospheric Sciences.

In an announcement, University of Arizona President Robert C. Robbins made a statement.

“This incident is a devastating shock to the community, and it’s an incredibly tragic event.” There are no words that could undo this, and I’m grieving with you over the loss and am deeply hurt for Tom’s family members, colleagues, and students. “

The suspect, identified as 46-year old Murad Dervish, was nabbed by state police at around five p.m. in Gila Bend, which is on Interstate 8 in Gila Bend, more than 100 miles from the scene, reported.

Prior to the shooting, UA officers received a phone call from an insider of the building stating that a former student was inside the building with no access. The officer was asked to be on hand to take him out, as per police.

A UA faculty student who was inside the building during the shooting said to that the building was filled with between seven and ten shots.
