Susan Ratner, New Jersey, Obituary, Visitation and Funeral Information

On October 14, 2022, Friday, 2022 Susan Scheman Ratner, a long-time resident of Short Hills, New Jersey, tragically and unintentionally died and left her family, friends, and many family members in complete and utter grief. As Susan was gone, her loved ones and family members were devastated.

Susan Ratner was born on May 6, 1964, in Brooklyn, New York, to Sandy and Terry Ratner. She was 58 years old at the time of her sudden but peaceful departure from her home. She was loved by her family and other close friends. Susan was a vibrant mom and wife, a caring sibling and child, a faithful friend, and a tireless advocate for female rights, the arts, and rights as well as Jewish culture. Susan was a natural optimist and a rock for her family. She will be greatly missed.

Susan was a child living in Fort Huachuca, AZ, and Huntington, NY, before the family moved to Smithtown, NY. After 15 years of high school with no failings, as well as local lifeguarding and an extensive summer camp theater career, Susan met the love of her life, Evan Ratner, as a freshman at high school in 1979, at one of her friends’ sweet sixteen celebrations. They stayed in touch for 43 years, beginning in high school through high school sweethearts who attended Columbia and Barnard and Barnard, respectively.

Susan has spent the latter part of her junior year abroad at Tel Aviv University after receiving an early admission to Barnard College. The experience ignited a lifetime love of Israel and a close bond with Susan’s Jewish faith. Susan started at Barnard as an undergraduate student in pre-med, but after a disastrous summer physics class, she switched to political sciences. After graduating in 1986 from Barnard in the year 1986, Susan has proudly and actively been a supporter of the school. She was a member of the President’s Advisory Committee, as well as funded Susan Ratner’s Ratner the ’86 Writing and Speech Pedagogy Series and created the Jessie G. Scheman Memorial Scholarship to honor her grandmother. Susan got married to Evan in 1988. She obtained a law degree at NYU in 1989.

Susan was well-known as a voracious reader as well as a devoted yogi and a fervent foodie, in particular when she was talking about Sancerre, salmon, and coffee ice cream. In her 30s, Susan took a page from Evan’s professional athletic career and began training for triathlons, which became an enduring passion (case in point: Susan’s iconic email address, dmdheeraj786@gmail.com). Susan had a lively machine gun laugh and an edgy alto belt, which she displayed in car rides, singing along in the company of Elton John, Carole King, and her enduring lover, Josh Groban. Susan had a long list of her most cherished aphorisms, also known as “Susan-isms,” for every scenario, including “Life is a series of cost-benefit analyses,” and the ever-relevant, ever-exasperating “It is what it is.”

Susan is survived by her husband, Evan, and three children, Alex, Matthew, and Daniel, as well as their grandparents, Sandy and Terry, and their sisters, Robin and Michael. A true racer, Susan faced her illness with incredible grace and strength and was extremely grateful to the medical professionals and aides, hospice staff, and other family members who assisted her during the past eight months. The funeral service is to be held on Sunday, October 16, 2022, at 11:00 am at The Bernheim-Apter-Kreitzman Suburban Funeral Chapel, 68 Old Short Hills Road, Livingston, NJ 07039. The funeral will be held at 12:30 p.m. on the same day at the Beth Israel Cemetery, 1098 Woodbridge Center Drive, Woodbridge, NJ 07095.

The Bernheim-Apter-Kreitzman Suburban Funeral Chapel is entrusted with making funeral and burial preparations. For those wishing to honor Susan’s memory, the family has established the Susan Scheman Ratner ’86 Scholarship Fund at Barnard College. Contributions can be made with credit card through the website barnard.edu/give (please specify your gift towards the Susan Scheman Ratner ’86 Scholarship Fund) or by making a check specifically for Barnard College and mailing it to Barnard College, Box AS 3009, Broadway, New York, NY 10027. Contact dmdheeraj786@gmail.com at (212) 853-8019 if you have any questions or want more details about other ways to make a donation.
